One Two Ready Go! — The World’s First Hong Kong Original Comic Focusing on Fancy Rope-Jumping
Created by local comic artist Jacob Yuen (袁鎮江), One Two Ready Go! is the world’s first comic centered on the sport of "fancy rope-jumping." Set against a school sports backdrop, the story follows two young individuals with very different personalities as they face challenges, setbacks, and personal growth through the sport of fancy rope-jumping. The comic focuses on passionate pursuit of dreams, showcasing athletes’ devotion to victory and the deeper meaning behind competitions.
Creation Background and Motivation
Jacob Yuen is an amateur cartoonist inspired by his daughter’s experience joining a jump-rope team since kindergarten. Seeing his daughter and many Hong Kong youths passionate about fancy rope-jumping, yet facing resource shortages and financial pressures because the sport is not officially recognized by the government as an elite sport, he hopes to use the comic to document the current status and spirit of the sport. He aspires for fancy rope-jumping to gain a bigger platform in the future, possibly even becoming an Olympic event.
Story Features and Artistic Techniques
One Two Ready Go! not only highlights the beauty of jump-rope movements but cleverly incorporates martial arts moves like sweeping kicks and flips to enhance the visual drama and professionalism. The comic sprinkles humor through character interactions to relieve competitive tension, achieving a balance between passion and light-heartedness.
The story also serves as a metaphor for the real-life struggles of the Hong Kong fancy rope-jumping scene: despite the Hong Kong team’s repeated achievements in international competitions, they struggle to gain mainstream recognition due to lack of resources and opportunities. This "marginalized sport" survival status is an important message the comic seeks to convey.
Creation Process and Challenges
During his participation in the 4th "Hong Kong Comics Power" program, Jacob faced tight deadlines and a lack of professional experience. Initially unfamiliar with comic layout and story structure, he refined the script repeatedly and drew inspiration from dance comics’ rhythm to complete the work. At the creative peak, he devoted entire days from morning till night to drawing, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and passion.
Debut at Ani-com & Games Hong Kong 2025
